Research
The Sperm Bank of California has been actively involved in research for over 20 years. We are leaders in the industry -- tracking the outcome of each insemination attempt, maintaining records of conceptions since the establishment of our organization, and conducting research on the well-being of TSBC families. More recently we've applied 10 years of research to develop and implement a system for the release of donor information to adults who were conceived through TSBC's Identity-Release® Program.Dr. Joanna Scheib directs research on
- Insemination methods & outcomes
- Recipient experiences with donor insemination
- Well-being of parents & children
- TSBC's Identity-Release® Program
- Addressing TSBC donor & family needs: Findings from the Identity-Release® Task Force & studies (1997-present)
- Tracking outcomes of donor information releases
Findings from this research help us understand the experience of having families through donor insemination. These findings have been used by academics, lawyers, and international governments to support the feasibility of open-identity donor programs. Moreover, they add to the growing body of knowledge on the positive well-being of DI families headed by single mothers and lesbian couples.
TSBC Stats
Since our inception in 1982
- Over 2000 children have been born to TSBC recipients.
- Girls make up 49% of the births.
- Close to three-quarters of TSBC families have donors participating in our Identity-Release® Program.
- Lesbian couples parent two-thirds of all children born through TSBC.
- Single-mothers-by-choice (all sexual orientations) and heterosexual couples head the rest of TSBC families.
- Close to 30% of TSBC families participate in the Sibling Program and have more than one child.
- One in five TSBC families participate in the Family Contact List. Of these, two out of three have matched to at least one other family with the same donor.
